Ruins of Hayakima
At about one hour walking from the village of Huambo, you'll find a big complex of ruins of the Cabana culture at the top of the hill. The ruins are still overgrown with cactuses and other vegetation. From the hill you have a beautifull view of Huambo and it's surrounding mountains and on the other side also of the village Chinini.
Lake of Mucurca
The lake of Mucurca is located at 4310 m. above sea level at about 5 hours walking from the village of Huambo. On the way up you'll find a few craters of meteors, a crack in the earth of about 40 m. by 25 m. and a small volcano-shaped water spring. The vegatation changes from acres of corn, broad beans and quinua to ichu (long andean grass) and yareta (light green moss like plant, growing in the shape of round rocks above 4000 m.).
Also the wild life is very diverse. There are lizards, snakes, viscachas, vicuñas and strange coloured insects. Also for birdlovers this is a nice hike. Apart from condors (early in the morning), there are humming birds, partridges and a lot of songbirds with all kind of colours. At the lagoon itself there are andean ducks and sometimes flamingos.
The lagoon is beautifully situated between several mountain peaks and you also have a magnificent view on the volcanoes Hualca Hualca, Sabancaya and Ampato.
Countryside below Huambo
In the valley below Huambo, you can do a nice and easy walk between terraces, old cottages, where people still live in a very traditional way, hills and archeological sites. During or after the rainy season (december till march) you can also see some nice waterfalls.
This route takes about 5 hours by foot, but you can also do it with a mountainbike and horseback riding is also an option.
First the route goes down to Yanacoto. In Yanacoto there is a nice viewpoint of the valley Huambo and it's terraces. From Yanacoto you go down to the bridge, crossing the bridge across the river Huambo. On the other side of the valley the route goes up, back in the direction of Huambo. along the way, you'll find some ruins of the Chuquibamba culture.
Canco
Canco is a small settlement and oasis at the junction of the river Colca and the river Huambo. Because it is situated at an altitude of 1820 m. above sea level, the climate is very nice and there are a variety of crops and (subtropical) fruits that grow there.
The route to Canco is very different from the one to Mucurca.

Donkeys, mules or horses
For donkeys, mules or horses please contact the people at the city hall (next to hospedaje municipal). This also to avoid problems with prices. The suggested price for donkeys is 15 soles and for mules 20 soles. For the total group of animals, usually one person guides the animals. This "arriero" earns about 15 soles a day. Maybe a little more if he also works as a guide for the group.
